Sicily, 1938…oh wait, wrong story (10 points to anyone who know where that line is from).
Seriously, though. It was a hot and muggy June night. My husband is away on a business trip and my daughter is asleep in her crib. I just finished a book and I stepped out on my porch for a cigarette. The air seems kind of weird, so I go back inside to check the weather.
Across the bottom of the TV screen is a flash about a tornado watch for my county. I figure I might as well put some water and baby food and a flashlight in the basement just in case. I gather the water and the baby food. I get the flashlight and oh, shit- no batteries. I’ll have to do without I guess.
I walk into Peanut’s room to bring her to bed with me, just in case we have to make a quick run for it later. As I step in her room, I hear the most terrifying noise I have ever hear in my entire life. My stomach drops instantly, it is the tornado siren! I grab Peanut and run with her down to the basement and turn on the TV. I am like totally petrified, I can’t even put it into words. Suddenly, the wind picks up and it starts to thunder and lightning and pour. My satellite reception goes out (but I still have electricity) so I have no idea what’s going on. I cling to my daughter as we lie on the floor of the basement (who, I swear, is just the calmest kid ever) and I try to call my husband, no answer. It is midnight on the East Coast and my cousin is probably the only person I know who is still up on a week night. I call and her boyfriend answers the phone. Luckily they haven’t gone to bed yet.
I ask them to tell me what the hell is going on with the weather here. They turn on the weather channel and go on the computer. Turns out tornadoes are in the the city that is like 20 miles away, but our siren is still going off. Finally, I calm down as I talk to my cousin and her boyfriend and the tornado threat moves away. It’s still stormy, but I get my TV reception back. I let them go and Peanut and I move from the floor to the couch so we can go to sleep.
I sleep with Peanut in my arms, just in case and I wake up every hour because of the horrible thunder and lightning going on outside. I was still petrified by the time morning came, even though it was bright and sunny. I think this place is going to give me an ulcer.
That was my first experience with tornadoes.
I miss Small State on the East Coast.
